Playbooks and Custom Portal Experiences

Is it possible to integrate a playbook (created with Process Automation Designer) into a custom portal experience created with UI builder?

Or can playbooks only be displayed to users in a Workspace experience?

Yup, if you build an experience in UI Builder, you can place a Playbook in that experience.

The primary use case from customers (so far) has been integrating with configurable Workspaces, which is why there is limited documentation and examples for Portals created from UI Builder.
