Why Business capability is in Fly/last phase of CSDM?

During the Design build only the capabilities will be known right?

Good morning Suggy,

there are multiple scenarios: (see pic below)

- Greenfield
- Alignment
In a greenfield and new Application onboarding you are right it starts with a demand for a new solution in the context of a business capability. This is the total lifecycle from demand till retirement.

In an alignment project you need to remediate your current state. (That can differ per situation I would say but most of the times this is operational data (no design area) as most companies started with ITSM/ITOM.

The other aspect is if companies are application focussed or service focussed. The first build a construct:

  • Business Application
  • Application Service
  • Applications

The second start with a construct:

  • Business Service (or technical)
  • Service Offering
  • Application Sevice

There is not one way to get what you need (that is important --> understand what you need today and tomorrow as it is a roadmap).

Hi @Barry Kant Thank you for replying.

1. My understanding from your response is, if its a fresh project (new instance), start with- 'Application focussed' first where we start defining Business apps, capability, Application services...

But if its a running project to remediate the current state, start with 'Service' focussed is it?

2. I know you kind of answered, still asking this question again.

In a greenfield ITSM implementation, where customers requirement is to track both Applications and Services, what is the recommended approach? Which of the 2 approaches to start with 'Application' or 'Service' focussed?

I know the asnwer is to start with what customer needs

Hi Sunny,

not as a rule.
It also depends how ready is the company (that is why it can be seen as a roadmap).
If a company is more Application focussed you can change them overnight to a Service focussed organization.
So it depends where are you today and where do you want to be in 2 years from now. That maps to your roadmap which requires:
collecting data
sometimes change of behavior/ownership etc.
Things to ask yourself/your organization:

What are the characteristics of your organization?
What is already good (quick wins?)
What needs preparation/changes?
What is the goal/ambition?

BR,
Barry
