Hi,
The "Source" field was originally used with the platform and I believe back then didn't have a specific purpose. It was used in various ways and not one set way.
Later the "SSO Source" field was created and is the intended field to use with SSO integrations. That is what the system will use now, by default.
Since the original "Source" field could contain data in customer's instances, ServiceNow created the new field (SSO Source) to house the SSO source data instead of overwriting the Source field data.
