How to start learning ServiceNow ITSM as a beginner?

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to ServiceNow and have a basic understanding of things like Business Rules, Script Includes, Server and Client Side Scripts, UI Policies, and Data Policies etc.. I’d now like to move into learning ITSM in a more practical, hands-on way, but I’m not sure where to begin.

Which ITSM modules would you recommend starting with? Also, if there are any free resources or environments I can use to practice, I’d really appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Bhavya_

If you want to start learning ITSM, then it is recommended to start with "incident management", "change management", "problem management", and "catalogs".
Best Place is "Now Learning" : ServiceNow ITSM Fundamentals on Demand (Xanadu) - ServiceNow University

It is also advisable to request a PDI for thorough practice.

You can request a PDI through the official ServiceNow Developer Site: Home | ServiceNow Developers

Guide: Guides | ServiceNow Developers To understand more about "PDI".
Also Go through:

Hey @Bhavya_

you can extend your knowledge at the developer site:

https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do

    • in the top there are tabs:
      • Learning Path
      • Courses
      • Learn
      • Certifications

beside that, the best source of information for ITSM would be ServiceNow university:

Hi @Bhavya_ ,

I have asked this question to the 'My Learning guide' in the  ServiceNow university, it has given a curated answer which seems perfect for your query:

A practical starting point for ITSM is to focus on these core modules: Service Catalog and Request Fulfillment, Incident Management, Problem Management, and Change Management. These modules are foundational and widely used in ITSM practices 1.

  • The ITSM Fundamentals course offers hands-on labs in a dedicated training instance, allowing you to practice real-world scenarios in a safe sandbox environment. This course is available as instructor-led or virtual instructor-led training and is designed for those administering or implementing ServiceNow ITSM applications 1.

  • For deeper, implementation-focused learning, the ITSM Implementation course covers Incident, Problem, Change, Request, Service Portfolio, and Configuration Management (including CMDB). It provides practical skills for configuring ServiceNow ITSM applications and includes extensive hands-on exercises in a personal training instance. The course is available both as instructor-led and on-demand formats (2, 3).

  • Both courses require basic ServiceNow platform knowledge and offer structured discussions, demonstrations, and group activities to reinforce learning. You can enroll and access these resources through the ServiceNow Learning Portal:

    • ITSM Fundamentals Course

    • ITSM Implementation Course

The best place to start with is university and developer.servicenow.com as people have already suggested.

Additionally i recommend you to use the Learning guide to get curated content and answers to your queries. Before you start with ITSM modules, understanding ITIL is a best practice. So i suggest you go through content on ITIL as well alongside your ServiceNow ITSM learning to gain a holistic understanding.

If my answer helped you in anyway, Please mark helpful and accept as solution.
