SAM Entitlements with Contract Renewals Best Practices

I've recently been told that our SAM Team is manually reassociating entitlements when a contract is renewed. This strikes me as something that should be automated on contract renewal as opposed to a need to reassociate. Can anyone provide some best practices and/or guidance on how this should work? We do have SAM Pro.
