Can't see the contracts with role "contract_manager"

Anybody know why there are no contracts listed for a user with contract_manager role?

To start with the obvious, do any contract records exist on the table shown in the url (ast_contract or something else)?  Is there a line just below this where the results should be that says something like x records not shown due to security constraints?

In my out of box PDI when I add the contract_manager role to a user that doesn't have any other roles, some other roles are automatically added, which I don't think matters here, and I can see the same 120 contracts in the ast_contract list.

Do you have this out of box ACL?
