Hi everyone!
I am excited to share that I have officially taken my first step into the ecosystem by completing the Welcome to ServiceNow micro-certification.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve started exploring and learning how the Now Platform works, understanding the user interface, and seeing how data flows through lists and forms. The sheer scale and capability of the platform are incredibly fascinating, and it has definitely sparked my curiosity to dive deeper.
Because the ServiceNow ecosystem is so vast, I am completely open-minded about where to go next. Rather than boxing myself into a specific track right away, I want to explore the different avenues available.
I would love to get some guidance and perspective from this amazing community:
* If you were starting fresh today, what learning path or next certification would you recommend focusing on?
* Are there specific simulator courses, hands-on practices, or community resources you found invaluable when you were starting out?
* What is one piece of advice you wish you had known at the very beginning of your ServiceNow journey?
I’m eager to learn, open to all possibilities, and looking forward to connecting with you all!
Thank you in advance for your insights and advice! 🙏

Hi @keerthimoru
As an experienced ServiceNow trainer, I'm happy to guide you here.
ServiceNow is continuously growing—becoming bigger, broader, and deeper. It now covers multiple modules and products, making it important to understand the platform carefully before deciding which path to pursue.
Since you're just starting, you've made the right choice by beginning with ServiceNow. A good next step would be to take an Administration course. This course will give you a better understanding of the platform, its core functionality, components, terminology, and how different products and processes work together.
You can choose the dedicated Certified System Administrator (CSA) journey, which is commonly recommended. It typically follows a structured learning path and helps build your end-to-end understanding of the platform.
One piece of advice: learn with an open mind. Don't focus solely on certifications. Learning is the key, and it's equally important to share what you learn with others. Consider this your foundation—the fundamentals should be clear and strong. Take your own time, avoid comparing yourself with others, and keep progressing steadily.
Main points from the message
- Start with ServiceNow fundamentals.
- Take a ServiceNow Administration/CSA learning path.
- Focus on understanding the platform, not just passing exams.
- Build a strong foundation before specializing.
- Learn at your own pace.
- Share knowledge and gain hands-on experience.
- Avoid comparing your progress to others.

I’m a ServiceNow trainer and happy to share my thoughts with anyone beginning their ServiceNow journey.
ServiceNow is growing rapidly in both breadth and depth. The best way to start is by earning the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification, which builds a solid foundation in platform fundamentals, terminology, and core modules. Once you gain hands-on experience through CSA, you can decide your next learning path.
Employers value professionals with multi-module expertise, so after completing CSA, consider exploring areas like ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps to broaden your portfolio.
Currently, the training is free, which is a great opportunity — though the real challenge lies in gaining hands-on experience. To overcome this, spend at least 1–2 hours a day engaging with the ServiceNow Community — read discussions, answer questions, and share your insights to strengthen your understanding and confidence.
If your goal is to become a developer, focus on building scripting skills using resources available on developer.servicenow.com. Regular practice will enhance your technical expertise.
Start with the CSA and then choose your direction based on your interests — whether as an Admin, Developer, Business Analyst, Change Manager, or Project Manager. A strong foundation will give you the flexibility to explore any of these paths.
Welcome to this vibrant community space where you can connect, collaborate, and grow. Share your ideas, seek guidance, and contribute to collective learning.
To take the next step, register on Now Learning and begin your ServiceNow learning journey today.

Hi @keerthimoru ,
Congratulations on earning your Welcome to ServiceNow micro-certification!
If I were starting today, I'd focus on the System Administrator (CSA) path first, as it provides a strong foundation across the platform. Make use of Now Learning, Personal Developer Instances (PDIs), and hands-on labs whenever possible—practical experience is invaluable. The ServiceNow Community is also one of the best resources for learning from real-world scenarios.
One piece of advice: don't try to learn everything at once. Build a solid platform foundation first, then explore areas like ITSM, CSM, HRSD, or development to find what interests you most.
Best of luck on your ServiceNow journey!

Hi @keerthimoru ,
Unfortunately one my response got spammed.
My Suggestion was - Go for CSA certification as from my experience , I have seen, most of the ServiceNow Project looks for at least CSA certified resource.
- Obtain Certification: The Certified System Administrator (CSA) is the most sought-after prerequisite for other ServiceNow certifications. Complete course : ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals prior to do certification.
If you have interest in coding ,
- First complete Application Development Fundamentals On Demand
- Check the syllabus from Certified Application Developer (CAD) Exam Blueprint
If you want to see you self as ITSM specialist ,
- Build Technical Foundations: Focus on mastering ITSM (IT Service Management) processes, including incident, problem, and change management. Complete course : IT Service Management (ITSM) Fundamentals
Also you can think of Business Analyst ,Quality Analyst role which might have functional or Techo-funcation knowledge.
You have to decide , which career path you want to choose, based on that further we can help.
You can choose your career path based on your interest from Career journey Path
Before that complete your CSA.

Hi @keerthimoru,
Congratulations on earning your Welcome to ServiceNow micro-certification and taking the first step into the ecosystem! 🎉
If I were starting fresh today, I would focus on building a strong foundation before specializing. My recommendation would be:
1. Complete the ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals course and work toward the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification. It provides a solid understanding of the platform and is valuable regardless of the path you choose later.
2. Spend time in a Personal Developer Instance (PDI). Hands-on practice is where the real learning happens. Experiment with tables, forms, lists, business rules, flows, and catalog items. Don't be afraid to break things—that's often how you learn the most.
3. Explore multiple areas before choosing a specialization. Take a look at ITSM, ITOM, CMDB/CSDM, SecOps, HRSD, SPM, and App Engine. You may discover interests you didn't expect.
Some resources that I found extremely valuable:
- Now Learning: https://nowlearning.servicenow.com
- ServiceNow Community: https://www.servicenow.com/community
- ServiceNow Developer Program: https://developer.servicenow.com
- ServiceNow Docs: https://docs.servicenow.com
- ServiceNow YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ServiceNow
One piece of advice I wish I had received at the beginning: focus less on collecting certifications and more on understanding how the platform solves real business problems. Certifications open doors, but practical knowledge and hands-on experience are what help you grow and stand out.
Enjoy the journey, stay curious, ask questions, and make use of the incredible ServiceNow Community. It's one of the most supportive communities you'll find in the tech industry.
Best of luck with your ServiceNow journey!!😉🎊
If you find my answer useful, please mark it as helpful and correct. 😊

Hello @keerthimoru ,
Congratulations buddy .
You can start with practicing in Servicenow PDI .
When you start exploring ServiceNow PDI, begin with understanding the basic platform UI:
Application Navigator, Banner, Content Frame (UI16)
Explore Forms and List Views
Company Branding and changing the Welcome Page
Context Menu (what it is and its types)
Breadcrumbs and how they work
Next, move on to data modeling basics:
Table and Field creation
Table dependencies and Table Extensions
Field types
Views
Important OOTB tables like User (sys_user), Group (sys_user_group), Role (sys_user_role), Delegations
Once you are comfortable with this, explore core configuration concepts:
Reference Qualifiers
Dot-walking
UI Policies
Dictionary Overrides
ACLs
Priority Lookup
Difference between Configuration vs Customization
Then understand data movement and backup concepts:
Update Sets (how to take backup of your work)
Update Set transfer methods
Import Sets
After learning these basics, you can confidently move forward to explore Service Management modules like:
Incident
Problem
Change
Request
And then deep dive into the Development part.
Then start with Certified System Administrator (CSA) – First & Mandatory
CSA is the basic and most important certification for ServiceNow beginners
It helps you understand how the ServiceNow platform works
Main topics to focus on:
Platform UI and navigation
Tables, fields, forms, and list views
Users, groups, and roles
Basic ITSM concepts
UI Policies, Client Scripts, and Business Rules (basic understanding)
Best practices:
Practice each topic in your Personal Developer Instance (PDI)
Do not just memorize answers—try to understand why a feature is used and when to use it
Once you follow this path, your ServiceNow learning journey will be smooth and structured
Try to spend 2-3 hours daily on community which will help you understand different real time scenarios ,different approaches . Explore University Course which also enhance your knowledge.
Start with the "Welcome to ServiceNow " training, it's really good and it will gives you your first certificate!
The Certified System Administrator (CSA) certificate is initial stage , it's useful for almost for any servicenow role .
You can refer this thread :
For Servicenow csa guidence you can refer following thread :
If this helps you then mark it as helpful and accept as solution.

Aditya
