What is AI Gateway?

AI Gateway is ServiceNow's governance and control layer for MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers in AI Control Tower. It gives AI Stewards and Product Owners the tools to discover, approve, configure, and monitor MCP servers — ensuring that only vetted, authorized integrations reach your AI agents.

Welcome to the AI Academy: AI Gateway video series — five focused videos covering every stage of the MCP server lifecycle in AI Control Tower, from discovery through observability. Whether you're an AI Steward governing your organization's MCP server landscape, a Product Owner onboarding new integrations, or a developer building in AI Agent Studio, this series walks you through each capability step by step.

Start with the end-to-end overview below, then dive into any individual video that covers the area most relevant to you.

In this article:

🎬 End-to-End Overview — Discover, Govern, Secure, and Observe MCP Servers

End-to-End Overview — Discover, Govern, Secure, and Observe MCP Servers

AI Gateway in AI Control Tower — one control plane for every MCP connection across your enterprise.

AI agents are only as trustworthy as the external tools they connect to. This video walks through the complete AI Gateway experience in AI Control Tower — from discovering and registering a new MCP server, through enforced approvals and automated client registration, to runtime controls and observability. Every step of the MCP server lifecycle, governed from one place.

What's covered

Discover — Registering a new MCP server using the Anthropic Community Catalog and catalog intake

Govern — Enforced approvals in AI Agent Studio, the Asset Approval Playbook, and automatic AI Gateway provisioning on approval

Control — Automated Client Registration using CIMD and Global MCP Clients, plus runtime Pause and Sensitive Data Protection controls

Observe — Gateway-level and tool-level KPIs, success rates, latency metrics, and access monitoring in AI Control Tower

Video 1 — Adding a New MCP Server via Catalog Intake

1 AI Gateway — Adding a New MCP Server in AI Gateway Using Catalog Intake

This video walks through the March 2026 release feature for using Anthropic's MCP server community catalog directly within AI Gateway. Product Owners and AI Stewards can now browse and intake MCP servers from a curated catalog, streamlining the process of bringing new integrations into your governed environment.

What you'll learn

How to use the MCP server community catalog in AI Gateway to intake new servers — making it faster and easier to discover, review, and onboard approved integrations for use in AI agents.

Video 2 — Enforced Approvals, AI Steward Review & Gateway Setup

2 AI Gateway — Enforced Approvals, AI Steward Review & Gateway Setup

This video covers AI Gateway's governance workflow end to end — from AI Steward approval and gateway setup, through a builder authenticating in AI Agent Studio, to the enforcement gate that blocks unapproved servers at the point of use.

What you'll learn

The Asset Approval Playbook, automatic AI Gateway provisioning, MCP Client Integration setup, and how Enforced Approvals work in AI Agent Studio to prevent unauthorized server access.

Video 3 — Automated Client Registration (CIMD / Global MCP Clients)

3 AI Gateway — Automated Client Registration (CIMD / Global MCP Clients)

This video walks through using automated client registration in AI Gateway to configure a Global MCP Client — such as VS Code — once, so it works seamlessly across all approved servers without requiring repeated manual setup.

What you'll learn

How automated client registration with CIMD works in AI Gateway, and how to configure a Global MCP Client like VS Code once for use across all approved MCP servers — reducing setup friction for development teams.

Video 4 — Runtime Controls (Pause & Sensitive Data Protection)

4 AI Gateway — Runtime Controls (Pause & Sensitive Data Protection)

Approving servers upfront isn't enough — AI Stewards need the ability to act immediately when something looks wrong at runtime. This video walks through the two runtime controls available in AI Control Tower's AI Gateway: Pause and Sensitive Data Protection.

What you'll learn

Pause (server level) — How to pause transactions to a specific server connection when it needs to be taken offline, and resume once the issue is resolved.

Pause (global level) — How to stop all AI Gateway traffic across the instance instantly with a single action.

Sensitive Data Protection — How activating PII detection on a server record blocks transactions involving sensitive data before they reach the external MCP server.

Video 5 — MCP Server Observability and Access Monitoring

5 AI Gateway — MCP Server Observability and Access Monitoring

Approving and governing MCP servers is only part of the picture — AI Stewards also need visibility into what's happening once those servers are live. This video walks through the observability features available in AI Control Tower for MCP servers running through AI Gateway.

What you'll learn

Gateway-level metrics — Transaction counts and success rates across all active servers from the AI Gateway tab on the AI Control Tower landing page.

Tool-level KPIs — Request counts, success rates, and latency at P50, P90, and P95 when drilling into a specific server record.

Access monitoring — How the Security & Privacy tab surfaces authorized and failed connection attempts over time, giving AI Stewards the signals they need to act.
