I am trying to write a report that will show the number of tickets opened vs. closed by month. I have a report that shows number of tickets opened each month and another that shows number of tickets closed each month. Is there a way to combine these and show them side by side?

There's an automated indicator that measures how many incidents were closed in the past day. I don't see where that's applied, but I do see several incident widgets available. Take a look at this URL (change YOURINSTANCENAME to your instance name.)

The above are good answers (and Performance Analytics is a great approach with lots of flexibility), but you may want to look Multiple Data Sets as well. https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/london-performance-analytics-and-reporting/page/use/reporting/con...
