Supported Licensing Models
The Microsoft publisher pack supports two primary licensing models for SQL Server in containers:
- Per core licensing: Each container is licensed as a standalone device. Licensing is based on the number of virtual CPUs (vCPUs) assigned to the container, with a minimum of four core licenses required per container.
- Server/CAL licensing: Containers are licensed using server licenses (either per instance or per server). Additionally, user or device Client Access Licenses (CALs) must be obtained for each user or device accessing the underlying physical server hosting these containers. Server (per instance) licenses cover specific installations, while server (per server) licenses cover all installations on a physical server. User CALs grant access per user regardless of devices used; device CALs grant access per device regardless of users.
