Of course, there are major concerns as well. It has long been feared that AI would make many jobs obsolete, which could hurt the national economy and workers. That said, things may not be as dire as some think; Pew Research found that among U.S. workers who are directly exposed to AI (those whose important tasks could be replaced by automated systems), many are taking a glass-half-full approach. Overall, the workforce is optimistic, believing that AI is more likely to be a support rather than a replacement for human workers. Still, increased use of AI will probably be accompanied by some shifting within various areas of the economy, and may introduce other dangers as well, such as:

  • Algorithmic bias and discrimination: Without careful design and oversight, AI systems may perpetuate (or even exacerbate) biases present in the data used to train them. This represents a major problem in publicly available AI, but it could be disastrous if it were to occur in government AI. Yet AI and related technologies offer more advantages than risks. To harness this potential and ensure AI’s benefits are widely distributed across society, it is essential that governments actively participate in creating and nurturing a conducive ecosystem for AI development and application.  

Governments should prioritize the following considerations to foster innovation and growth within the AI sector and ensure that AI technologies are utilized safely, effectively, and advantageously for the general public: 

  • Creating comprehensive regulatory frameworks: Governments need to establish regulatory frameworks that balance the promotion of AI innovation with the safeguarding of citizens' rights. These frameworks must be capable of addressing critical issues such as data privacy, using AI systems in ways that don’t risk the exposure of personal information. 
  • Developing standards for AI safety and ethical use: Safety and ethical standards must guide developers creating and deploying AI systems that are reliable, transparent, and free from biases. 
  • Promoting STEM education: To build a workforce capable of driving AI innovations, governments must invest in education with a strong emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This includes integrating AI and machine learning concepts into curricula at all levels of education. 
  • Supporting continuous learning: Recognizing the rapid pace of technological change, it is important to provide opportunities for continuous learning and professional development in AI-related fields. This can involve funding for scholarships, online courses, and workplace training programs to help workers stay abreast of the latest advancements. 
  • Encouraging academic research: Governments should allocate resources to support academic research in AI. This includes support for universities focusing on advancing automated technologies and their applications. 
  • Supporting startups: Encouraging the growth of AI startups through financial incentives, incubation programs, and mentorship helps translate research into marketable products and services that address societal needs.
