How will AI change the future of work? Before we answer that, let’s talk about where we are.
In just a few short years, technology leaders and workforces everywhere practically developed whiplash as a result of how fast generative AI apps have flooded the tech landscape since 2022. As of 2025, there are over 10,000 funded AI startups around the world. And since ChatGPT changed the trajectory of basically every company in November 2022, we’ve witnessed the rapid evolution of generative AI, the dawn of AI agents and now agentic AI, and the debut of AI browsers that promise to change how people search, discover, and make decisions.
To say people are overwhelmed might be the understatement of the year. Not only do I hear it in my conversations with business leaders, but it’s right there in the data for anyone to see. It’s why the average score in ServiceNow’s Enterprise AI Maturity Index slipped nine points in 2025.
Now back to the headline. Have we been speculating about AI’s impact on the future of work since before the launch of ChatGPT? Yes. Do we now have a much clearer idea of where things are likely to go? Also yes. So, let’s pause and plan ahead.
