Azure Data Protection Backup Vault pattern-based discovery
Summarize
Summary of Azure Data Protection Backup Vault pattern-based discovery
The Azure Data Protection Backup Vault pattern-based discovery enables ServiceNow customers to automatically find and map Azure Backup Vault resources within their cloud environments using the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application. This functionality supports comprehensive visibility into Azure Backup Vault services by populating detailed data into both CMDB and non-CMDB tables.

Key Features
- Pattern Activation: The discovery pattern is disabled by default and must be enabled. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, enabling or disabling patterns is no longer considered customization, ensuring patterns receive ongoing updates while retaining prior activation status after upgrades.
- Azure GovCloud Support: Discovery of Azure GovCloud (US) accounts requires configuring the Azure service account with a specific datacenter URL.
- Data Population: The pattern populates resource data into:
- Non-CMDB tables: Using the Azure - Data Protection Backup Vault - Extended Inventory(LP) pattern, data such as resource kind, location, object ID, resource group, subscription ID, and tenant ID are stored in the cmdbazuredataprotectionbackupvault table.
- CMDB tables: Key resource attributes including install status, location, name, object ID, operational status, and resource type (set as microsoft.dataprotection/backupvaults) are stored in the cmdbcicmpresource table.
- Configuration Item (CI) Relationships: The pattern establishes important CI relationships such as containment by resource groups, hosting by Azure datacenters, and references between backup vaults and cloud resources to support accurate service mapping.
- Tag Discovery: Azure tags assigned to Backup Vault resources are collected and stored as key-value pairs in the cmdbkeyvalue table, enabling enhanced categorization and filtering.
Practical Considerations for ServiceNow Customers
- Ensure Microsoft Azure discovery prerequisites are met before enabling the pattern.
- Activate the Azure Data Protection Backup Vault pattern to begin discovery; this will allow you to track backup vaults and their metadata accurately within your CMDB.
- Configure discovery schedules appropriately, especially when working with Azure GovCloud environments.
- Use the populated data and established CI relationships to gain comprehensive visibility into Azure Backup Vaults, supporting better asset management and service mapping.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns finds Azure services on your cloud environment. Discovering some of these resources may require updating to the latest version of the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store.
Pattern-based discovery and mapping requirements
- Verify the Microsoft Azure discovery prerequisites
- For more information, see the prerequisites section in Microsoft Azure Cloud components discovery using patterns.
- Enable the relevant pattern
- The pattern for this service is disabled by default. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, activating or deactivating a pattern won't be considered a customization, and it will continue to receive updates. Patterns that were previously activated or deactivated will reset to the latest predefined version after upgrading while retaining the last active field value. For more information on enabling patterns, see Activate a disabled pattern.
- Configure the Discovery schedule to support GovCloud
- Discovering Azure GovCloud (US) accounts requires using a datacenter URL when setting up an Azure service account. For more information, see Set up Azure service accounts.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in both CMDB and non-CMDB tables.
Data stored in non-CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in the non-CMDB table when running the Azure - Data Protection Backup Vault - Extended Inventory(LP) pattern.
You can review the non-CMDB Azure tables by navigating to . You can also search the navigation filter for the specific pattern name.
