Azure Application Insight Data Collection Rule pattern-based discovery
Summarize
Summary of Azure Application Insight Data Collection Rule pattern-based discovery
The Azure Application Insight Data Collection Rule pattern enables ServiceNow customers to discover and map Azure Application Insight Data Collection Rule resources within their cloud environment. This pattern leverages the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application to identify Azure services and populate both CMDB and non-CMDB tables with detailed resource data.

Key Features
- Pattern Activation: The Azure Application Insight Data Collection Rule pattern is disabled by default and must be enabled. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, enabling or disabling patterns does not count as customization, allowing seamless updates.
- Discovery Scheduling for Azure GovCloud: Configuring discovery for Azure GovCloud requires setting up Azure service accounts with the appropriate datacenter URL.
- Data Population: The pattern populates detailed Azure resource information into both CMDB and non-CMDB tables:
- Non-CMDB Table: Azure Application Insight Data Collection Rule records with fields such as Object Id, Kind, Location, Resource Group, Subscription Id, Tenant Id, and Provisioning State.
- CMDB Table: Cloud Resource records include Object ID, Name, Location, Install Status (default Installed), Operational Status (default Operational), and Resource Type (set to microsoft.insights/datacollectionrules).
- Configuration Item Relationships: The pattern establishes relationships among Cloud Resources, Resource Groups, Azure Datacenters, and the Application Insight Data Collection Rule for comprehensive mapping.
- Tag Collection: Tags associated with Azure resources are collected and stored in the Key Value table, capturing both tag names and values for enhanced resource metadata.
Practical Implications for ServiceNow Customers
By enabling this pattern, customers can automatically discover Azure Application Insight Data Collection Rule resources and maintain an up-to-date, detailed inventory within their ServiceNow CMDB. This supports better visibility, governance, and operational management of Azure monitoring configurations. Proper setup, including activating the pattern and configuring discovery schedules (especially for GovCloud), ensures comprehensive and accurate data collection. The enriched CMDB with relationships and tags helps in impact analysis, compliance, and service mapping.
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns finds Azure services on your cloud environment. Discovering some of these resources may require updating to the latest version of the Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application from the ServiceNow Store.
Pattern-based discovery and mapping requirements
- Verify the Microsoft Azure discovery prerequisites
- For more information, see the prerequisites section in Microsoft Azure Cloud components discovery using patterns.
- Enable the relevant pattern
- The pattern for this service is disabled by default. Starting with Visibility Content version 6.28.0, activating or deactivating a pattern won't be considered a customization, and it will continue to receive updates. Patterns that were previously activated or deactivated will reset to the latest predefined version after upgrading while retaining the last active field value. For more information on enabling patterns, see Activate a disabled pattern.
- Configure the Discovery schedule to support GovCloud
- Discovering Azure GovCloud (US) accounts requires using a datacenter URL when setting up an Azure service account. For more information, see Set up Azure service accounts.

Data stored in non-CMDB tables
Discovery and Service Mapping Patterns application populates data in the non-CMDB table when running the Azure - Application Insight Data Collection Rule - Extended Inventory(LP) pattern.
You can review the non-CMDB Azure tables by navigating to . You can also search the navigation filter for the specific pattern name.
