Add or remove CIs for single application services using connection suggestions

  • Release version: Xanadu
  • Updated August 1, 2024
  • 2 minutes to read
  • If discovery based on Predictive Intelligence is enabled, newly mapped application services include only configuration items (CIs) and CI connections added using discovery patterns. Use the suggestions for CI connections, generated by Service Mapping, to complete the application service.

    Before you begin

    • Confirm that fingerprint-based discovery remains enabled, since it is enabled by default. To verify, navigate to All > System Properties > All Properties. Check that the sys_property process.clustering.appfingerprint.enabled property does not appear on the list.
    • Confirm that discovery based on Predictive Intelligence is enabled. Navigate to the System Property [sys_properties] table and verify that the sa_ml.connection_suggestions.active property is set to True.

    Role required: service_mapping_admin

    About this task

If discovery based on Predictive Intelligence is enabled, Service Mapping automatically adds connections to service instances based on connection rules. These suggestions are generated from traffic-related data in the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and an analysis of application fingerprints, CIs, and processes. Predictive Intelligence evaluates and ranks the relevancy of these connections, and Service Mapping then uses this information to create connections and provide suggestions for servers and load balancers. Then you can decide which connections to add or remove from service instances. For more information, see Traffic-based discovery in Service Mapping.

    Important:
You can add or remove CIs using connection suggestions only in application services discovered by Service Mapping.

    Procedure

    1. Optional: View information about all application CIs in connection suggestions.
See Discover applications based on fingerprints for more information.
      Important:
If you don’t use fingerprint-based discovery, some application CIs might be mapped as generic applications, lacking specific identification or detailed information.
    2. Open the service instance map.
      1. Navigate to All > CSDM > Manage Technical Services > Service Instance.
      2. Select the needed service instance.
      3. On the service instance page, select View Map.
    3. Select Suggestions > Connection Suggestions at the top of the map to see suggestions for the entire application service.
Alternatively, right-click a CI for which you want to see connection suggestions and select Show connection suggestions.
    4. Review the suggestion details paying attention to the parameters covered in the Connections Suggestions list.
    5. Optional: If you haven't discovered application CIs, discover a standalone CI of the application class based on fingerprints:
      1. Select the Preview icon Preview connection suggestion icon next to the relevant suggestion based on the application fingerprints (AFP).
The Connection Suggestion list opens showing details of this suggestion.
      2. Select the Preview this record icon next to Target AFP, and then select Open Record.
      3. Select Discover Application.
      4. Select Refresh in the Review suggested connections window to ensure that the displayed information reflects the discovered CI classes.
        Important:
Not using fingerprint-based discovery may result in mapping some application CIs as generic applications.
    6. Select the check boxes next to the relevant suggestions and click the action button at the bottom of the window:
      Action Result
Add Service Mapping includes both the connections and the CIs that these connections lead to, making them part of the service instance. The Decision value for added connections changes to Added manually.
Exclude Service Mapping excludes connections and the CIs they lead to from the service instance. The Decision value for removed connections changes to Excluded manually.
Reset Service Mapping reverses earlier decisions, whether made manually or by rule. The Decision value for reset connections changes to Undecided.

This action is relevant only if you have already used connection suggestions to complete this service instance.

    7. Select Close to leave the Review suggested connections window.

    Result

The application service map reflects the changes you made. The connections you added and the CIs they lead to appear on the map.
