Summary of Viewing related items on the Unified Map timeline
The Unified Map timeline in ServiceNow Yokohama release helps you visualize the history and impact of related items such as incidents, problems, and changes on a selected Configuration Item (CI) over time. This timeline is synchronized with the map, enabling you to see how the CI and its relationships existed at a specific point in time and how these items affect the CMDB topology.

Key Features
- Interactive timeline and map synchronization: Selecting a CI displays related items on the timeline. Dragging the map time marker sets the map and timeline to show data as of that date and time.
- Map time control: Default map time is the current moment, but you can set it to any past or future date within a six-month range.
- Visualization of related items: Markers indicate related items on or before the map time; multiple items on the same date are grouped with a badge showing their count.
- Timeline span adjustment: Zoom icons allow you to change the timeline’s visible range from six months in the past to six months in the future.
- Detailed information access: Pointing to markers or badges reveals dates, times, and details of related items.
- Marker management: You can add, replace, or clear markers on the timeline to customize your view.
- Viewing related items for all CIs: Clicking empty space on the map shows related items across all CIs.
Practical Use and Benefits
This feature enables ServiceNow customers to quickly understand the historical context and sequence of events impacting a CI, improving root cause analysis and change impact assessments. By adjusting the timeline and map time, users can explore how past or planned changes affect the environment. The synchronized timeline and map provide a powerful visualization tool for managing and troubleshooting CIs within the CMDB.
Configuration
Administrators can configure timeline properties affecting all users, such as which related item details appear. This customization helps tailor the timeline display to your organization's needs.
The timeline indicates related items like incidents, problems, and changes over a specified period of time for the selected CI. You can use the timeline to visualize the history of changes to a CI and how they affect the topology of the CMDB.
Viewing related items
-
When you first open a map, CIs and relationships appear as they are at the current moment in time. When you select a CI on the map, the timeline displays related items for the CI.
-
You can drag the map time marker (A in the image) on the timeline to specify the end date (the map time) for data that should appear on the map and on the timeline. The default map time is "now", but you can specify a particular date or drag the marker to a date.
-
The map and the timeline are synchronized. The map shows the selected CI and its connections as they existed (based on the creation date of nodes) at the specified map time. The timeline displays markers (B in the image) to indicate related items that happened at or before map time.
-
You can also specify the overall time span (C in the image) of the timeline view.
- CIs that were created after the map time don't appear on the timeline and don't affect items on the timeline.
- Multiple related items on the same date are indicated by a badge that shows the count of related items.
