Frequently asked questions What is AI?
AI (artificial intelligence) describes the various technologies that make it possible for machines and computer systems to perform tasks with human-like intelligence. These tasks include decision-making, problem-solving, learning and more—allowing users to increase their efficiency and productivity.
What is generative AI?
Generative AI, also known as GenAI, is a type of artificial intelligence that creates content by learning from existing data. GenAI can provide realistic and creative text, images and other media to transform industries such as entertainment, marketing and healthcare.
What's the difference between AI and generative AI?
AI is a term that describes all forms of machine learning and intelligent automation, while generative AI is specifically focused on the creation of new content based on—but also capable of going beyond—the data sets it was provided with during its training phase. With the recent advent of widely available chat AIs, most AI interactions for the average user actually involve generative AI.
Does Now Assist support FedRamp and GCC customers?
Yes. U.S. federal agencies and Microsoft 365 Government Community Cloud (GCC) customers can access Now Assist as of June 2024. There are a few limitations, which you can read about in this article.
What languages are supported by Now Assist?
Now Assist is designed to support a variety of languages. Through multilingual support, Now Assist allows users to ask questions in their preferred language, making it accessible to a diverse audience. With automatic translation, users can pose questions in any language, and they will be automatically translated into English for processing. After translation, the system retrieves the most relevant knowledge articles to address the customer's query. The retrieved content is summarised using generative AI and then translated back into the customer's original language.
What AI models does ServiceNow use and support?
ServiceNow has developed its own domain-specific Now® large language models (LLMs) that are trained and fine-tuned on ServiceNow customer use cases on the ServiceNow AI Platform. Additionally, the company supports third-party GenAI models including Microsoft Copilot, Azure OpenAI, IBM WatsonX, OpenAI and Google Gemini. ServiceNow also supports LLMs provided by its customers to give them the flexibility for a wide range of use cases.
What is machine learning?

Machine learning (ML), a type of AI, uses a data analysis method that automates model building by gathering and interpreting large sets of data.

Machine learning applies advanced AI solutions, using data and algorithms to create data models. A model is a mathematical expression that approximates the relationship between the variables that appear in the data and enables the ability to predict one from the other. A very simple example of a model would be a linear relationship that predicts a person's weight from their gender and their height. Rather than following specific, pre-programmed rules, machine learning mimics the human learning process, improving itself through experience and training.

What is an LLM?
An LLM (large language model) is a deep learning-based AI that uses transformer models—sets of neural networks made up of encoder and decoder pairs—to understand and generate text. Trained on extensive datasets, it uses self-attention to process relationships in language, serving as a generative AI for creating content.
What is an AI chatbot?

AI chatbots are a subset of chatbots that incorporate artificial intelligence technologies to enhance their conversational abilities. These technologies include machine learning, which allows a chatbot to refine its responses over time based on accumulated data, as well as natural language processing (NLP) and natural language understanding (NLU), both of which enable the chatbot to interpret and respond to user enquiries more accurately.

AI chatbots are designed to facilitate more natural and intuitive interactions, progressively improving through deep learning to minimise misunderstandings and provide relevant responses.

What are AI agents?
AI agents are autonomous software entities that can perceive their environment, make decisions, act independently to achieve specific goals and incorporate new data to improve performance over time. AI agents can handle tasks without constant human intervention, making them useful for assisting people with applications like customer service, workflow automation and data analysis.
What's the difference between a Now Assist-powered AI chatbot and ServiceNow AI Agents?

AI chatbots that are powered by Now Assist use machine learning and natural language processing to interpret user inputs, generate human-like responses and improve their capabilities through ongoing interactions.

ServiceNow AI Agents represent a leap forward from AI chatbots. They can learn, think, collaborate and act autonomously without relying upon user inputs. This functionality creates new possibilities, such as teams of ServiceNow AI Agents proactively working together 24/7 to resolve IT incidents or customer support tickets, driving exponentially greater productivity for your people. Meanwhile, you remain in control by setting the guardrails for ServiceNow AI Agents and specifying when their actions require human approval.
