3 citizen developers at ServiceNow: Jason M., Madhu B., Sushil K.

Ever heard of a ServiceNow-powered kegerator? When you have a highly intuitive and powerful platform, it’s hard not to get creative with it.

ServiceNow technology empowers noncoders (citizen developers) and coders alike to build new applications that solve real problems—and create real fun. With a global software developer shortage, it’s key for companies to find ways for their employees to build workflows without having prior coding knowledge.

Inspired by our low-code, no-code technology, ServiceNow employees—regardless of their software expertise—like to use the Now Platform to build simple apps to enrich their communities, hobbies, and more.

Boozy tech

When Director of Developer Evangelism Jason M. needed a bartender for ServiceNow trade show demos, he put his innovation skills to the test. “I make a lot of things with our tools and platform,” he says.

He drew the line at mixing cocktails, though. That would be the job of the ServiceNow-powered bartender robot he created—without much effort and in very little time. “One of the great things about working on the Now Platform is just how quickly you can solve any kind of problem,” he says.

Trade show attendees were blown away by the intuitiveness of the interface and the precision of the drinks. The robot has a database of 10,000 recipes, Jason says. “It lets you build the menu, and the bot makes the drink for you.”

That’s only one of Jason’s innovative inventions. Others include a Lego train and a ServiceNow-powered kegerator.

Monitoring stocks

When Sushil K., senior applications engineer, heard about an opportunity to build an app on the Now Platform to monitor stocks, he volunteered to help. Although he’s a software engineer, Sushil is hooked on the ease of use of App Engine. In no time, he built an app that could be used to check or track any stock.

He didn’t stop there. “I got a request to build another app for executives that’s called the VP+ Nomination App,” Sushil says. Before long, he’d created something that enables employees to seamlessly provide recognition to their hardworking colleagues.

“I feel really fulfilled to know that my application, which I built, will be actually used by top executives in our company,” Sushil adds.

Filling the gap

Madhusmita B., project manager, saw a gap in her local development community. Developers needed a way to collaborate on the applications being developed. The only caveat: She didn’t have any coding knowledge. But that didn’t stop her.

As part of the internship program, Madhusmita built an app that provides visibility for everyone across the company to see what’s in development.

“It gave me a purpose,” she says. “It was not for one particular team that I was doing it. It was for the entire community.”

Requiring no-code to low-code, the Now Platform makes it simple to automate almost anything. Whether you need a few cocktails while checking your stock performance or you want to find a way to bring like-minded people together, the Now Platform can help.
