Veterans' legacies: Treasured tokens of service and sacrifice
Each year on Nov. 11, the United States, UK, and Canada pay tribute to the brave individuals who’ve dedicated their time to serve in the armed forces. At ServiceNow, we have deep pride, appreciation, and respect for our veterans and their legacies throughout the entire year. We're grateful for both their commitment and the spirit of service they bring to our company.
This year, three of our veteran employees share cherished items that hold special meaning and remind them of their time in service. Watch the video to see what these treasured tokens are:
Hallmark of bravery
Senior Insights Analyst Nick G. proudly displays a kukri knife in his home office—a gift from the Nepalese rangers during his 12 years in the U.S. Army. This national weapon of Nepal represents the ancient lineage of the soldier profession and the unbreakable bonds among soldiers across diverse cultures and generations.
“It’s a reminder to me of that deployment, my teammates, and my time in service,” Nick says. It also serves as a symbol of the camaraderie he experienced.
Circle of pride
Candice R., a customer success manager and a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, prizes a unique round wooden keepsake she received as a going-away present from the 11th Special Operations Intelligence Squadron.
Each marking on the board embodies a distinct meaning within the unit. Most notably, the embedded coin symbolizes excellence and was given to Candice by the unit commander for her service as first sergeant. It stands as a testament to the rich history and collective pride of the unit.
“I am very proud to have served in the Air Force for 21 years,” Candice says. “It really gave me an opportunity to give back to this country.”
Emblem of resilience
Reflecting on his time in the U.S. Army, Mike M., a senior design recruiter, treasures a belt buckle he earned after completing The Manchu Mile—a rigorous, 25-mile “rucksack march” across the Korean countryside. The march commemorates the endurance of soldiers who completed an 85-mile march during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.
The buckle serves as a souvenir of Mike's triumph over adversity and determination to push through struggles. “It reminds me of the difficult challenge it was to earn that belt buckle,” he says. “I bring that resilience and that perseverance with me today.” Interestingly, this buckle is the only uniquely designed belt buckle authorized to be worn with the Army uniform.
The mementos of these three employees exemplify their experiences in serving their country, forging enduring connections with fellow service members, and shaping their identities. As a company, we honor and value the sacrifices, skills, spirit, and service of veterans, and their continuing contributions to our workplace and beyond.
