Celebrating Latin traditions and pride

Unidos Heritage Month: ServiceNow employees celebrating Latin traditions

Every fall from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the U.S. celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to honor the rich culture and contributions of Latin Americans. At ServiceNow, we extend that commemoration year-round and globally.

Our Unidos at ServiceNow employee belonging group offers a supportive community for Latin employees and their allies to foster career growth, volunteerism, and social connection. Three employees share their stories of embracing their Latin traditions and customs.

Championing community and family values

Omar M., an advisory solution consultant, learned the importance of community advocacy from his mother, a passionate supporter of Latino civil rights.

“She was involved with the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund,” he explains. “She was always striving to engage Latinos in voting and championed civil rights.”

Her dedication instilled in Omar a deep respect for his Mexican American heritage and the community’s contributions. These values have guided him in raising his son, Issac, to follow the “Omar way,” a term Isaac overheard someone use to describe his dad’s strong work ethic, attitude, and approach to putting others first.

Issac feels honored to call Omar his dad, saying, “He’s an example of perseverance and loyalty both at work and at home.”

Embracing “pura vida”

Sales Operations Analyst Keirin R. and her husband, Rai, embody the spirit of “pura vida,” a Costa Rican expression that captures their country’s relaxed and joyful approach to life. “It represents our culture,” Keirin explains. “It can be used to express a lot of emotions, positive and negative, but it really represents us as a country,” Rai adds.

The couple shares a love of Harry Potter, American football, and the natural beauty of Costa Rica. “The smells, the rain, the rivers, and the sunsets—they’re the best,” Keirin says. The couple’s joint passions and pride in their country strengthen their bond.

Preserving heritage

Julio F., senior software quality engineer, moved to the United States from Panama at the age of 12. Now, as a father of two, he’s committed to passing down his cultural heritage to his children.

One special custom he’s sharing with his daughter is a “tembleque,” a traditional Panamanian beaded headpiece that girls wear during cultural celebrations. Julio’s mother made the tembleque by hand for Juliana, which she proudly wears. “Knowing my grandmother made this, I know she cares about me,” Juliana says.

Julio hopes his daughter, who wants to become a doctor, continues the family’s traditions and strong work ethic. “I want her to be the best person she can be and to realize all her dreams,” he says.

These stories illustrate the importance of family, heritage, and resilience in our Latin community. We celebrate the diverse backgrounds and experiences that enrich our workplace and society.
