License Key Discovery Tables and Fields
License key discovery relies on two main tables:
- License Registry Configuration (snaccviscontentlicenseregistryconfig): An admin-managed list defining registry paths and value names to collect license keys from endpoints.
- License Keys (snaccviscontentlicensekeys): Stores the actual license key values discovered on devices.
The License Keys table captures details such as the device (configuration item), associated SAM product, user assigned to the device, the discovery configuration rule used, exact registry path, discovered key value, last scanned date, and an "Absent" flag indicating if the key is no longer found. Keys are never deleted but marked as absent instead.
The License Registry Configuration table includes fields for the SAM product, Windows registry path and value name to read, a combined name field, description notes, and an active flag to include or exclude the record from future scans. The combination of product, registry path, and value name must be unique.
Access Control
Access to these tables is role-based:
- ACC application admin: Full read, write, create access on License Registry Configuration; read-only on License Keys.
- Discovery admin: Full read, write, create access on License Registry Configuration; read-only on License Keys.
- SAM admin: Read-only access on both tables.
- All other roles have no access.
Scheduled Job
A scheduled job named "Refresh License Key Config File" runs daily at 8:30 a.m. UTC to support license key discovery. This job executes only if the property snaccviscontent.enablelicensekeydiscovery is set to true and the SAM Professional plugin is activated.
Practical Benefits for ServiceNow Customers
This setup enables customers to systematically discover, store, and manage software license keys from endpoint devices through registry data collection. The configuration flexibility and controlled access ensure accuracy and security in license data management. The scheduled job automates configuration refresh to keep discovery up to date, supporting efficient software asset management and compliance.
